A client update should make the project easier to manage. It should explain what changed, what remains uncertain and what needs a decision. “Working on tracking” gives the reader little to act on. “The purchase event passes the agreed test cases; the release still needs consent checks” describes a useful state. Good updates connect technical work to the next step without promising more than the evidence supports.
Agree on what an update must tell the reader
At the start of the work, agree on the update channel, recipients and timing. A short written update may be enough for routine progress. A meeting may be useful when people must resolve competing priorities. Decide which changes need an immediate message, such as a failed release check or a dependency that threatens an agreed date. Do not leave an urgent decision inside a weekly summary that nobody expects to read today.
Keep six questions in view: what was agreed, what is now verified, what remains, what blocks progress, who must act and when the next check happens. Report evidence of completion rather than effort alone. “I spent four hours debugging” may explain budget use, but it does not tell the client whether the event is reliable. “The duplicate event has been reproduced; the fix is awaiting a developer review” does.
A worked update for a tracking implementation
Consider a hypothetical analytics project. The agreed work covers purchase tracking for card and bank-transfer orders on a staging site. The analyst has completed the card-order checks. The bank-transfer flow is not available in staging. A Friday handover depends on access by Wednesday. These are example conditions, not a report of a real client project.
A useful message could read: “Card-order checks passed the agreed cases on staging. The test record contains the order IDs and observed events. Bank-transfer orders remain unverified because the staging flow is unavailable. The implementation is not ready for handover. Please confirm by Wednesday noon whether the developer can enable that flow. If access arrives then, I can confirm the remaining test schedule. Otherwise, we need to revise Friday’s handover.”
