You ask an AI search tool one question. Behind the answer, the system may run several different searches.
That is query fan-out: expanding one question into related searches, then using the results to build an answer.
The term sounds technical. The useful question is simple: what information does the system need before it can answer you properly?
For a website owner, that raises another question. Does your content provide useful evidence for the problem someone wants to solve?
One question can contain several information needs
Google describes query fan-out as breaking a question into subtopics and searching for them simultaneously. The system can investigate several parts of a problem before composing its response. Google explained this process when introducing AI Mode.
Think about asking someone to recommend an analytics tool. They need more than a product name. They might need your budget, reporting requirements, technical resources, and existing systems.
Some of those details will be in your question. Others will be missing. Related searches can help gather information about the different options and constraints.
The distinction matters: gathering more information and understanding your situation are separate tasks. A search can find a tool's pricing. It cannot establish your budget unless you supply it.
An analytics question makes the process easier to see
Imagine asking: “Why do purchases in GA4 differ from orders in our backend?”
A system using query fan-out could investigate several possible explanations:
